A simple meal plan you can start with one free printable

When deciding what to cook becomes another daily job, a short meal plan can give you a starting point. You do not need seven new recipes or a perfectly stocked kitchen. Begin with three dinners your household already likes and leave room for plans to change.

Check the week before choosing the meals

Write down the evenings when time or energy will be short: a late finish, an appointment or an after-school activity. Put your easiest familiar dinner on those days. Leave a meal that needs more preparation for a day when you expect to have time. This makes the plan useful for the week you actually have.

Look at what is already there

Before writing a shopping list, check your fridge, freezer and cupboard. Note a few ingredients you want to use, checking labels and following the storage guidance on the packaging. Choose meals around those ingredients where practical. The aim is to avoid buying something you already have, rather than build a completely new menu.

Fill three spaces first

On the free Mini Meal Planner, write three familiar dinners. For example, one might be a pasta meal, another a baked potato with a favourite topping and another a dish your household already makes regularly. Adapt each to your family’s dietary needs. Leave the other days flexible until you know how much structure is helpful.

Turn those meals into a short shopping list

For each dinner, check the ingredients against what you have. Add only the missing items, then check breakfast, lunch and everyday essentials. The free Quick Shopping List gives you somewhere to collect the final list. Put it where the person doing the shop can find it, and agree who will add any last-minute items.

Keep a backup and review one thing

Choose one familiar, low-effort meal as a backup for a disrupted day. At the end of the week, ask which dinner was easiest to get on the table and which planned meal you skipped. Carry the helpful idea forward. If you want more structure later, the paid Meal Planner & Shopping List Bundle adds freezer and cupboard inventories, family favourites and planning pages; the free sheet is enough to begin.
