Build a school-morning routine your family can follow

Start with the point where mornings usually become difficult. You may need a home for the school bag, a reminder about PE kit or a little more time between breakfast and leaving.

Work back from leaving time

Write down when you need to leave, then list the few steps that must happen before it. Allow for the pace your child actually needs. A short list is easier to follow than a page full of reminders.

Prepare three things tonight

Check tomorrow’s plans, place the bag in its usual spot and choose clothes. If a form or special item is needed, put a reminder with the bag. Food and drink preparation should follow your usual safe storage routine.

Choose words or pictures

Use a written checklist for a child who likes reading the steps, or choose a few illustrated routine cards to talk through together. Start with the same three or four steps. Keep cut cards away from under-threes.

Agree what the grown-up will do

Make the child’s list manageable by separating adult tasks, such as reading school messages or checking transport. Practise the sequence at a calm time and use a familiar, encouraging reminder.

Review after a few mornings

Ask which step felt easy and where more time was needed. Change one thing, then try again. The aim is a routine that fits your family, rather than a perfect morning every day.
